Did you know a new Haunted Mansion movie is in the works? Once upon a time, there was talk about Guillermo del Toro adapting Disney’s popular ride into a new movie too, but that never panned out.

Apparently, the idea of a new adaptation is coming to fruition, though. According to The Kingdom Insider, we know who the writer is as well as a couple of other details. Let’s check out what we know so far about the new Haunted Mansion movie.

1. The New Haunted Mansion Movie Will be Live-Action

Some people hear “Disney” and automatically assume a movie based on one of its original rides will be animated. It appears this one will follow in the footsteps of other Disney-rides-turned-live-action movies, like the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and the 2003 Haunted Mansion movie with Eddie Murphy.

But it won’t be a remake of the Eddie Murphy movie. (Thank goodness. 2003 isn’t that far back and that movie wasn’t good enough to warrant a remake.)

Deadline reported that “Insiders say this will be a completely different take as a film that stands on its own.”

2. The Writer

Katie Dippold is on board as the movie’s writer.

Her writing credits are heavy on comedy, including TV shows like MADtv and Parks and Recreation and movies like The Heat (starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy) and the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot (which also starred Melissa McCarthy, as well as Kristen Wig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones).

Does this mean it will be another comedy like the Eddie Murphy version? No one knows yet, but given her past writing history, I’d think it’s safe to assume it will be more comedy than horror.

As The Hollywood Reporter put it, “The trick with Haunted Mansion for Disney has always been the fine-line balance of genuine scares, fun and appropriateness for the wide Disney audience.”

A trick indeed, but they sure get it right with the ride. Let’s hope the new movie can too!

3. The Producers

The same duo who produced Disney’s live-action Aladdin, Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, are producing the new Haunted Mansion movie too.

4. The Director

Justin Simien, best known for Dear White People (both the movie and the Netflix series) will direct. However, he also directed the comedy-horror, Bad Hair, so he brings that experience to the table too.

There’s still no word on cast or release date, but as soon as there is you know I’ll share it.

Because I love the Haunted Mansion ride so much I popped to go to its special 50 years of retirement unliving party back in 2019, so yeah. I’ll be keeping an eye out for more about this movie. It’s one I’ll want to see! What about you? Are you a Haunted Mansion fan too?

  1. I thought the Eddie Murphy Haunted Mansion house was cute. I watched it with my then young daughter. I don’t think I would enjoy it as much if I didn’t have a kid, though. Kids help liven things up.:-) I did know The Rock was starring in a another Disney ride move, but I had forgotten all about it. Thanks for the reminder.:-)

You once again hit the nail on the head, this time with ” Kids help liven things up.” Yes. That. I often bemoan not having more children in our lives because they definitely have a unique view on the world that aids these jaded eyes into seeing things from a new and fresh perspective. Maybe a friend will let me borrow one of theirs when the new HM movie comes out? I’m making note of that! THANK YOU!
