Visiting the Stanley is a bucket list travel destination for many macabre-minded restless spirits. For good reason. The hotel leans into its claim to fame as the inspiration for Stephen King’s The Shining, offering ghost tours and inviting guests to stay in one of its haunted rooms.
But what if it could get even better? What if you could stay in a non-Shining horror movie-themed room there? Would you want to?
Maybe it might help to know what your options are. The rooms are inspired by one of four Blumhouse films: Insidious, The Purge, Happy Death Day, and Freaky.
But one more thing to keep in mind before you make your pick is the level of terror you can handle. Each room is ranked by “daggers.” The more they have, the more intense the “Scare Experience.” (More on that below.)
It’s all part of one of the most interesting promotional events I’ve seen in years: “Overnightmare.”
In partnership with Blumhouse, Peacock will take over The Lodge at The Stanley Hotel for one weekend this year: from Friday, October 18 to Sunday, October 20.
Both companies have upcoming releases due out this spooky season, which will be featured as part of the “Overnightmare” experience. Blumhouse has a new video game coming soon, Fear the Spotlight. Peacock has two new horror series coming out this October, including James Wan’s Teacup, which premiers on October 10, and Hysteria!, which premieres October 18.
Overnightmare Highlights
A “conci-scare-ge” will greet guests upon check-in and will guide them through the weekend’s festivities. They’ll also acquaint them with the venue’s specialty spaces.
In the Teacup Room, a spooky salon, guests can venture inside the world of Teacup, Peacock’s new thriller series from James Wan’s Atomic Monster.
The Blumhouse Bar offers a haven for horror fans to have a sip and a scare and play Fear the Spotlight.
Overnightmare Scare Experiences
Once the sun sets, the scares ramp up with “frightful after-dark experiences” and “things that quite literally go bump in the night.”
Based on room selection, guests participate in one of four personalized, fully immersive “activations.” The experiences will feature interactive characters, narratives, and scares inspired by Freaky Friday, Happy Death Day, Insidious, or The Purge.
Sounds intense. But apparently the experiences are “geared toward different horror levels to allow guests to face their fears no matter their terror threshold.”
As mentioned earlier, the rooms are ranked by daggers. The fewer daggers there are, the more “tame” the experience. Here’s how they shake down:
- Happy Death Day | “Time Loop Terror” | One Dagger – “The dorm party no one wanted just got crazier. 1 out of 4 daggers. All the thrills without too many chills.”
- Freaky | “Body Swap Surprise” | Two Daggers – “A killer on the loose, a teen in over her head, and a body swap gone terribly wrong. 2 out of 4 daggers. Equal parts suspenseful and fun.”
- The Purge | “Under Siege” | Three Daggers – “Survival becomes the name of the game when the lawless chaos of Purge Night begins. 3 out of 4 daggers. Be prepared for full-on immersion.”
- Insidious | “Journey Into the Further” | Four Daggers – “When the veil between worlds lifts, darkness is all that remains. 4 out of 4 daggers. This is our most intense scare experience.”
Screenings
Guests will also be treated to two nights of screenings, including episodes of Teacup.

The weekend package includes a two-night stay in a double occupancy room in The Lodge, an interactive Scare Experience, a complimentary welcome dinner, $100 credit toward breakfast or lunch at Brunch & Co., nightly screenings, and two drink vouchers for the Blumhouse Bar per guest.

I’d stay in a one-dagger because if I stayed in a four-dagger, I wouldn’t get any sleep and then the next day I’d be scared of my own shadow!
I’m with you, Priscilla!!! My initial reaction was for the Purge room when I saw they had one. BUT…that would be way too intense for me. I’m surprised it’s the 3 dagger room and not the 4. Although Insidious is pretty terrifying in its own right… lol
Still, either way, anything more than 1, I don’t think I could handle. Even that might be too much for me. lol
