Rage Rooms: What are they and are they really all the rage?

Wait. Where have I been? Rage rooms are a real thing?

I always thought having a place to smash, bash, and destroy things at will would be such a great stress reliever. Maybe I’d heard about such a place or that someone wanted to create such a space, but until I saw an Axios article about rage rooms, I didn’t realize any actually existed.

The next question was, “Are there any rage rooms near me?”

OMG, Nashville has a couple, including a Smash City Rage Room, which also has locations in San Diego and San Jose, California. Now I think the Predators should open one because, during hockey season, Nashville becomes “Smashville.”

Then again, in a way, once upon a time they did. During playoffs one year, they put an old car in front of Bridgestone Arena with whatever the opposing team’s name and logo was that they were playing that week. For like $5, fans could use a sledgehammer to wail on the car. I don’t remember if it was a set amount of whacks or time, but it seemed like a money-maker. People lined up for it. However, it’s been years since I went to a hockey game. For all I know, they still do it.

Anyway, if they don’t they should. But are rage rooms even good for mental health?

Axios didn’t seem to think so. And Very Well Mind agreed that “venting anger doesn’t actually result in catharsis or relief—instead, it typically reinforces and even worsens anger.”

Well, that’s a bummer. But it still sounds like fun…and I imagine it’s a decent form of exercise too. A good arm and obliques workout.
