Did you watch the Academy Awards this year? If you did, did you see the commercial for the Overlook Hotel?

If you didn’t, and you’re a horror movie aficionado,  you may be asking, “As in the Overlook Hotel from The Shining?”

Yes!

Specifically the one in the original movie, a.k.a. Stanley Kubrick’s version.

Masterpiece of Iconic Scenes

There were so many iconic scenes from that movie, weren’t there? Such as:

  • The maze
  • The bathroom scenes (with the lady in the bath tub and Jack busting through the door with the axe)
  • REDRUM written in lipstick on the door
  • The hallway scene with the twins
  • The blood pouring out of the elevator

Just to name a few. Maybe more come to your mind.

These are the ones The Academy Museum used to create an ad that I hope receives some kind of award. Mostly because I’m a huge horror movie fan and I think this is a fantastic nod to one of the classics, but also because it’s just so very cleverly done.

The Commercial

I had searched online for it immediately after I saw it hoping to share it, but I couldn’t find it. It wasn’t until recently when I was going through Google alerts that I found it. Thanks to a post on Comicbook.com.

They shared the Academy’s Tweet, which included the “commercial” for the “newly renovated Overlook Hotel.”

“If you’re looking for a quiet, remote family getaway, then look no further than the newly-renovated Overlook Hotel. With our famous garden maze and beautifully appointed interiors, there’s a surprise around every corner. Our staff is hard at work to make you feel welcome. The Overlook Hotel, come stay with us, forever and ever.”

However, I’ve also since discovered it’s easily found on YouTube.

And I do mean, call now!

Because thanks to Comicbook.com’s post, I learned that there are even more treats in store from the commercial: the phone number that’s featured on it. It’s for the Overlook Hotel Reservation Line.

Pardon the all caps and emphasis, but OMG! THIS IS A MUST CALL!

You’re placed on hold with elevator music playing. Periodically a man comes on to tell you about all the hotel has to offer, such as:

  • “Feeling overworked? Come play with us in the world famous Colorado Room. You’ll never want to leave.”
  • The specific food you’ll find there, which is a reference to the well stocked store room.
  • “Our world class concierge is a little man who lives in your mouth and he can’t wait to meet you.” (My personal fave.)

It’s about three and a half to four minutes long, but if you are at all a fan of The Shining, this is a must listen!

(Did I say that already? Does it sound like I’m repeating myself? I am. There’s a reason for that too. Trust me. You’ll be telling everyone you know to call the number too!)

Comicbook.com also points out that the “237” in the phone number is a reference to “the” room. You know, the one Danny is warned to stay away from and of course doesn’t.

Go inside the movies.

All of this is a clever ad for the Academy Museum, which will open in 2019.

For now, you can visit their website: https://www.academymuseum.org/.

Boo-K It for Real

Unfortunately you can’t really stay at the Overlook Hotel, but if you want to stay at the one that inspired Stephen King’s book, you can always book a night at the Stanley Hotel.
