Did I need another streaming service? Netflix, Hulu, HBO Now, Showtime, even Amazon Video (which is included in my Prime membership so I do count it, but not really)…how much TV time do I need?
Confession
To be honest, I’d love to have hours and hours of TV time. I’m a total Boob Tube Junkie. There. I’m owning it. Boob. Tube. Junkie. That’s me.
Yes, I’m aware there are more productive ways to spend my time, but… Well, anytime there’s a but, whatever comes before it doesn’t matter anymore, does it? I love being entertained and escaping into other worlds, lives, and situations. I don’t know why, but I like good stories and I really like watching them.
Anyway, so that answers that. I don’t need another streaming service. However, I’ve been super curious about Shudder.
Is Shudder Worth It?
My friend Emz from HorrorAddicts.net had once asked on her HorrorAddicts.net Facebook group if anyone had it and what they thought about it. Did they feel it was worth it?
I wasn’t sure how much it cost then. Now I know it’s as low as $4.75 a month if you do the annual plan; it’s $5.99 a month for the monthly plan.
But the fact that it would be one more monthly expense, on top of being one more streaming service… {insert dilemma here}.
Sundance Now vs. Shudder and A Discovery of Witches
Then recently my friend Sheila started raving about a new-to-her show that she started watching: A Discovery of Witches. It sounded really good, so I looked to see if one of my streaming services had it.
Yep. Sort of. Via Amazon Prime Channels –if I signed up for either Sundance Now or Shudder.
I really wanted to watch this show so I could talk about it with Sheila. It looked like it was time to break down and add another streaming service. But which one: Sundance Now or Shudder?
I looked at what both offered. I saw other movies and such that would appeal to me on both, but Shudder’s content made my heart race.
There were horror movies I cut my coming-of-age teeth on: Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Sleepaway Camp, Hellraiser, Heathers…just to name a few.
Then others I’d heard about and had been wanting to see, like Eli Roth’s History of Horror and Black Noir.
And then there were all kinds of things I hadn’t heard of before that looked good, like: Summer of ’84, You Might Be the Killer, and Better Watch Out.
A Whole New Scary World
I haven’t even started watching A Discovery of Witches yet. I got distracted adding all sorts of things to my Amazon Watchlist from the Shudder channel.
I watch a variety of genres, but horror is always my go to. If I had taken the the time to research Shudder’s selection earlier, it would’ve been a no-brainer. I would’ve already subscribed.
I couldn’t believe what a great selection they had. Every sub-genre too, from Sci Fi and Killers, to Psychological Thrillers and Paranormal.
So, there you have it. Did I sign up after my free one-week trial? You betcha!
Shudder is the horror streaming bomb!
P.S.
Just for full transparency, Shudder is not one of my affiliates. Amazon is though.
Check-In
Are you a Shudder subscriber too? What have you watched? Any suggestions for things I should add to my list?
Courtney Mroch is a globe-trotting restless spirit who’s both possessed by wanderlust and the spirit of adventure, and obsessed with true crime, horror, the paranormal, and weird days. Perhaps it has something to do with her genes? She is related to occult royalty, after all. Marie Laveau, the famous Voodoo practitioner of New Orleans, is one of her ancestors. (Yes, really! As explained here.) That could also explain her infatuation with skeletons.
Speaking of mystical, to learn how Courtney channeled her battle with cancer to conjure up this site, check out HJ’s Origin Story.
I can tell you truly enjoy Shudder because your review was so fun to read! Sigh, no, we don’t have it. I get lost down a rabbit hole when I start watching too much boob tube, so I have to keep it reigned in. It sounds like a fab streaming service though!
It’s because you’re busy being good and actually writing…AND reading!! You’re so good to avoid streaming services as much as possible. It’s why you’re so productive.
