Their “It’s Coming” video pretty much gave it away, but Sci-Fi World’s big announcement on November 17 did reveal their grand opening date. Sort of.

Even before their announcement, info on their website said that they were looking towards a 2022 opening. The exact date is still TBD, but they’ve narrowed it down a little more. They’re aiming for summer 2022. If all goes well, sometime in July 2022.

Their newsletter about the projected opening date held more revelations, however. Including a link to their Kickstarter page with loads more info. Let’s explore that.

Sci-Fi World’s Summer 2022 Opening

Per the info in their newsletter, they’re pre-selling tickets through Kickstarter starting at $20 (children/teens) and $25 (adults). They say, “once we reach our goal, our doors will open 6 months later.”

And what is their goal? An ambitious $350,000.

To clarify, their Kickstarter runs for two months. Once it ends, sometime around mid-January 2022, they’re aiming to open the museum six months after that.

If they don’t open by mid-2022, all pre-order tickets come with a money-back guarantee.

Sci-Fi World Kickstarter Pledge Categories

Pledge categories start at $10 (no reward, just showing your support because you believe in it) and range up to $1,000 for a Sci-Fi Wedding at any Sci-Fi World exhibit that you want.

In between, there are a bunch of different pass (ticket) categories, from a single visit to an annual pass. Most of the ticket category pledges also include an exclusive certificate and a limited edition pin.

If you already know you want some merch, you can pledge your support in the form of a Sci-Fi World Baseball Cap ($15) or a Sci-Fi World 2022 T-shirt ($20).

They even have a Limited Editon Pin and Virtual Tour ($20) for those who can’t physically attend for whatever reason. They’ll mail you the pin and email the link to a virtual tour once they open.

They also revealed a little bit about the mall, saying, “it will be inside one of the largest malls in LA, and central to Hollywood studios.”

“Sci-Fi World will be like Comic-Con every day.”

Sci-Fi World opening contingent on Kickstarter?

Here’s what they wrote in their FAQ:

If Sci-Fi World does not open its doors within 6 months after this Kickstarter is successful, all backers will be reimbursed. Likewise, if this Kickstarter does not reach it’s goal pre-selling enough tickets, no one will be charged, and unfortunately, that will mean the museum will probably not open in 2022 as we planned. We WANT our museum to open and be successful, it’s the only way to make this dream come true and make millions of people happy!

Will the mall be Sci-Fi World’s permanent location?

Another thing I noticed on their Kickstarter page was this paragraph:

The success of this Kickstarter will help launch Sci-Fi World’s very first museum popup, which will be located inside a mall in the Los Angeles area. Sci-Fi World intends to keep its museum open as long as it can.

Does the term “popup” suggest it may also “pop-down” and perhaps travel elsewhere? No telling. It’s taken a long time to even get to this point. They’re not quite there yet, but hopefully their Kickstarter campaign will be a success.

In the FAQ on their Kickstarter, they included some…what would you call them? Inside sci-fi jokes? Easter eggs? They’re included below.

Do you know the answers to these questions? Even better, do you know which sci-fi classics they come from?

  1. What is the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything?
  2. How many lights are there?
  3. What is the Force?

  1. 1. 42, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
    2. There are four lights, poor Picard!
    3. I reckon this one is from Star Wars. If so, the Force is the life energy that runs through all creation.

  2. Author

Okay, I totally bow to you. I knew they all had to be from something, but the only one I knew for sure was #3, the Star Wars one. You are amazing. If I ever could have you on a trivia team? Oh yeah! I’d pay you!!!! lol Also, you just earned yourself 3 more bankable bonus points for this!
