On Sunday May 11, 2014, Showtime will premier a new drama called Penny Dreadful. If you like Gothic Victorian horror and suspense this show will appeal to you too. (Yes, I have a penchant for that sort of thing myself.)
From the Penny Dreadful page on Showtime, here’s what the show is about:
Some of literature’s most terrifying characters, including Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, and iconic figures from the novel Dracula are lurking in the darkest corners of Victorian London. PENNY DREADFUL is a frightening psychological thriller that weaves together these classic horror origin stories into a new adult drama.
I got a kick out of learning about penny dreadfuls. Or re-learning I should say. I remember learning about them once upon a time in a galaxy far, far away.
Okay, so it was in this galaxy but it feels like it was another one. It was way back when I was in English class in high school. We learned about what kids our age 100 years before us used to read. Sensational serialized tantalizers that appeared in weekly publications called penny dreadfuls.
Below is the trailer to whet your appetite. Also be sure to check out penny-dreadful.com. There’s all kinds of graphics to click on that immerse you in what Penny Dreadful is inspired by and trying to accomplish. Very atmospheric!

Courtney Mroch is a globe-trotting restless spirit who’s both possessed by wanderlust and the spirit of adventure, and obsessed with true crime, horror, the paranormal, and weird days. Perhaps it has something to do with her genes? She is related to occult royalty, after all. Marie Laveau, the famous Voodoo practitioner of New Orleans, is one of her ancestors. (Yes, really! As explained here.) That could also explain her infatuation with skeletons.
Speaking of mystical, to learn how Courtney channeled her battle with cancer to conjure up this site, check out HJ’s Origin Story.
