I spotted an article from WTOL11 about a new exhibit that will be on display at the Toledo Museum of Art from June 12 through September 5, 2021. It’s called “Supernatural America: The Paranormal in American Art” and was organized by the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
As WTOL put it, “This is the first museum exhibit to broadly examine this relationship between American artists and the supernatural.”
They also included this quote from Lauren Applebaum, associate curator of American art at TMA:
“Whether through early pseudoscientific studies seeking to understand parapsychology, government documentations of UFOs or individual reckonings with the spirits of those who have passed away, American culture is filled with tales of the supernatural and accounts of paranormal experiences. This complex and multifaceted subject has beguiled American artists for centuries and remains compelling for TMA’s audiences today.”
Holy Toledo, does this sound like a spooktacular exhibit or what? Let’s take a dive into what we know so far about it besides its run date.
Supernatural America Works of Art
The WTOL article said the exhibit would display 150 objects from the early 19th century through the present. It will include all sorts of things, from paintings, sculptures, drawings, and sketchbooks to journals, photographs, clothing, and more.
Supernatural America Artists
Other than to say that “many living and contemporary artists [will] have their work featured,” the article didn’t name any artists in particular.
However, I’ll keep my eyes peeled and if I learn more, I’ll shout!
Museum Prices
I’m not sure if there will be an extra charge for the limited-time Supernatural America exhibit or not, but it appears their prices to enter the museum are very reasonable: Free!
However, the WTOL article specified that admission is free for children four and under and museum members. It’s $12 for non-members, and $10 for military, college students, and seniors. Kids 5-17 pay $7.
However, I couldn’t confirm those prices on their site.

P.S. They don’t have anything on their site about the Supernatural America exhibit yet, but I’m sure as it draws closer they will.
Check-In
Are you excited to see the paranormal being embraced in this way?
Courtney Mroch is a globe-trotting restless spirit who’s both possessed by wanderlust and the spirit of adventure, and obsessed with true crime, horror, the paranormal, and weird days. Perhaps it has something to do with her genes? She is related to occult royalty, after all. Marie Laveau, the famous Voodoo practitioner of New Orleans, is one of her ancestors. (Yes, really! As explained here.) That could also explain her infatuation with skeletons.
Speaking of mystical, to learn how Courtney channeled her battle with cancer to conjure up this site, check out HJ’s Origin Story.
It’s a fascinating topic for an art exhibit. I’d go if I lived in Toledo!
