Terror DTLA is an escape game room, game publisher, and haunted attraction based out of downtown Los Angeles, California. They do live events, including a haunted house, around Halloween, but thanks to our favorite star of 2020, COVID-19 (yes, I’m being sarcastic), Terror DTLA has had to do what so many service and attraction-based businesses have had to do this year: Adjust.

Their solution? To create a horror game experience people can enjoy from home in the form of DTLA: Son of Sam, an immersive haunted escape room game.

Terror DTLA: Son of Sam Trailer Storyline

You are trapped inside your home during a summer heatwave. A power blackout has blanketed your neighborhood in fear as a serial killer moves quietly through the darkness. You must work together to solve the mystery and survive the night. Could this terrifying copycat killer of the infamous 1977 Son of Sam murders be lurking now outside your own front door?

Immersive Haunted Escape

DTLA calls this activity an Immersive Haunted Escape (IHE) game. Here’s how they bring these three elements to life:

  1. Immersive: You don’t just sit in front of your computer to play. You get up and interact with your environment via “dares,” which are four immersive challenges.
  2. Haunted: Character videos, scary sounds and jump scares add to the horror of the terrifying mystery unfolding before you as you play.
  3. Escape: Just like a real escape room game, you search the room to find clues and solve puzzles and codes. Just point and click!

How to Play

You play online via your computer.

You can either play alone or with others, either those who live with you or you can do it virtually with friends but still social distance. All you need is Zoom, Google Hangouts or some equivalent. Something that lets you share your screen with others.

Price

On their site, they priced out what an immersive experience (such as a trip to a museum), as well as admission to a haunted house or horror simulation and an escape room, might cost. By their calculations, all of that combined would come to $242.

But they also factored in two free bonuses they’re including that are worth $127 and $99 each.

All told, they calculate the value of their game is $468.

Ouch. Yeah, that’d be too rich for my blood.

Lucky for me –and anyone else who wants to play this game– you get all the value they outline for the bargain price of $17.

Okay, for that, I’m in. Especially because it’s a limited time offer.

Also, I can play more than once if I want to. Not sure yet if I will, but I’ll find out as soon as I play it. I’ll write a review to let you know how it goes.

  1. i haven’t been to an escape room. I hear they’re pretty difficult to solve. Terror DTLA coming up with a haunted escape game is a brilliant idea for these 2020 times.

  2. Author

They are hard and you need good puzzle/problem solvers on your team. I was playing escape games on my Kindle before they became pop places to go so I knew what to expect. The people I went with didn’t and quickly got frustrated which wasn’t fun. But the room monitor was generous with the clues to try and diffuse the situation. We didn’t escape but in the end we did have fun and only 1 said they’ve never do it again. (Sadly, my hub. Of course. LOL)
