4. The Ghost of Lady Sophia and Amhuinnsuidhe Castle

In the Call the Midwife 2019 Christmas special, the nuns and nurses stayed in pretty primitive conditions in the episode. The church was dilapidated and cold, without any heat and I want to say without any running water either? But I’m not positive about that. In any case, the conditions were not idyllic.

However, in real life, the cast did not have to suffer like the characters they played. They stayed in a posh 12-bedroom mansion called Amhuinnsuidhe Castle.

RadioTimes included a quote from Helen George, the actress who plays one of my favorite characters on the show, Trixie: “We stayed in an amazing castle so we were very spoilt. And we had these amazing dinners. It was a bit Downton Abbey, I’ll be honest.”

Rumor has it that Lady Sophie Scott haunts the castle. She was 67 when she died in 1937 and was buried behind the castle that she hosted many parties in. She’s said to be a friendly ghost.

Laura Main, who plays one of the sweetest characters in Call the Midwife,  Shelagh Turner, got to stay in Lady Sophie’s room. But there’s no word if she, or any of the other cast, experienced paranormal activity during their stay.

I don’t know if they’re all as wonderful as the characters they play, but if they are and if Lady Sophie is as friendly a ghost as people say, I imagine she very much enjoyed their visit.

  1. I love Call the Midwife! Even though it’s kind of, I dunno, womanly, my husband loves the show too! We both enjoyed The Lighthouse movie as well. I didn’t know the Hebrides were so full of history. Interesting post! I’m looking forward to the Call the Midwife 2020 Christmas special!

Okay, I love ALL of your comments, Priscilla. However, some comments thrill me more than others, and finding out that you’re a Call the Midwife fan too…and that your hub likes it too?! I’m SO excited to know another fan!!!! I swear, I think you’d be so interesting to have dinner with. Or a coffee. I imagine we’d talk and talk. I’m super excited about watching this year’s special too. And I was shocked to learn so much about the Outer Hebrides…beyond there was a spooky stay the cast had slept in! So I’m excited you got a kick out of learning about all these places too!
