Princess Diana’s Death

Fishwrap, the official blog of Newspapers.com, recently published a post in remembrance of Princess Diana’s death. It included a week’s worth of headlines from around the world, starting with the day she died on Aug. 31, 1997, to her funeral on Sept. 7, 1997.

It details how she, her boyfriend, Dodi Fayed, and the man driving the car they were in, Henri Paul, died when the car lost control and crashed into the entrance of the Pont de l’Alma tunnel. By Sep. 2, the sensational reports of the driver being drunk, speeding at 120 miles an hour, and taunting the paparazzi that they wouldn’t catch them started surfacing.

But it also includes stories of the mounds of flowers left in tribute at Kensington Palace, a reflection of the outpouring of love from all those who held the princess in such high regard and why she was called “The People’s Princess.”

And of course, there are the photos of young William and Harry, which to this day still tugs at my heart. (But she would be proud of them, wouldn’t she? They’ve both had their troubles, but overall they’ve grown into the wonderful men I’m sure she hoped they’d become.)

  1. I don’t remember where I was when Princess Diana died. I’ve never been a big follower of royal families, so I’m not surprised. I do remember a friend breaking down in tears.

Oh! This is SO interesting!!!! I figured it was one of those major history moments like JFK or MLK’s assassination or the shuttle blowing up or even 9/11 that people would remember where they were when they heard. I’m not into the royal family either (because I don’t understand it all) BUT I remember where I was because I happened to be in an English Pub with an Australian co-worker and her ex-pat British friends having dinner. I was seated right across a framed photo of Princess Di.

Although…now that I think about it, was that when I heard the news or did it just so happen we all had planned to go out to dinner that night or the next? My memory isn’t exactly clear on that now that I stop to think of it so maybe I’m misremembering! lol
