Do you think The Walking Dead creators took the whole “If Daryl dies, we riot” threat to heart? Is that why they decided on the Daryl Dixon spin-off?
I’m not sure. It’s something I’d ask if I ever got to talk to anybody from the show, but I have a hunch it has more to do with something else. (Which I’ll address in just a sec.)
But I know there’s only one response to the forthcoming series: Oh là là!
Well, okay, obviously, there’s more than one response. But that’s the first one I had.
Except, it wasn’t so much in response to the show, which I knew was happening, but to the fact it hasn’t aired yet but has already been renewed for season 2. That’s the news out of this year’s Comic-Con International.
I think it may have to do with the fact another spin-off had such a strong debut. In addition to Daryl Dixon season 2, AMC Networks announced The Walking Dead: Dead City was also greenlit for season 2.
Not surprising. Especially because the series that paired stars Lauren Cohan (“Maggie”) and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (“Negan”) debuted in June as the #1 season premiere in the history of AMC+. In other words, The Walking Dead universe continues to attract eyeballs.
I admit, I was curious to see how things would play out between Maggie and Negan. It’s why I was glad AMC+ was part of the Prime Day 2023 deals. I took advantage of the 50% off for two months for that and to access Shudder. I wasn’t even thinking about the Daryl spin-off at the time. Bonus!
The highly anticipated debut of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, starring Norman Reedus, is set for September 10 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on AMC and AMC+. Let’s take a quick look at what we know so far.
About The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon
Here’s the synopsis from AMC Networks:
In The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, Daryl (Reedus) washes ashore in France and struggles to piece together how he got there and why. The series tracks his journey across a broken but resilient France as he hopes to find a way back home. As he makes the journey, though, the connections he forms along the way complicate his ultimate plan.
In addition to Reedus, the series stars Clémence Poésy, Adam Nagaitis, Anne Charrier, Eriq Ebouaney, Laika Blanc Francard, Romain Levi, and Louis Puech Scigliuzzi.
It’s executive produced by Scott M. Gimple, showrunner David Zabel, Reedus, Greg Nicotero, Angela Kang, Brian Bockrath, and Daniel Percival.
More Walking Dead Universe News
There’ll be even more Walking Dead this Fall, when the second half of the eighth and final season of Fear the Walking Dead premieres.
Maggie, Negan, and Daryl aren’t the only ones whose storylines fans want to continue following. There have long been mutterings about a series with Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira). AMC Networks referenced it in their news about the Dead City and Daryl Dixon renewals. That spin-off series is still as yet untitled but looks set to premiere in 2024. #SomethingToLookForwardTo

Courtney Mroch is a globe-trotting restless spirit who’s both possessed by wanderlust and the spirit of adventure, and obsessed with true crime, horror, the paranormal, and weird days. Perhaps it has something to do with her genes? She is related to occult royalty, after all. Marie Laveau, the famous Voodoo practitioner of New Orleans, is one of her ancestors. (Yes, really! As explained here.) That could also explain her infatuation with skeletons.
