I came across an article from wdef.com about how the Read House in Chattanooga had a special unveiling ceremony for, and tours of, their newly renovated Room 311 on March 11. (Get it? The date and the room number match.)

Apparently (or apparition-ly, as the case may be) many who have previously stayed in the third floor room believe it is haunted by a woman who was murdered there, Annalisa Netherly.

The Hotel

The Read House is a historic hotel located in downtown Chattanooga. The whole hotel has recently undergone a multi-million dollar restoration, not just room 311.

However, whereas the hotel’s other renovations were made with improving guest experience in mind, Room 311’s were not.

Here’s what the hotel’s general manager is quoted as saying on the hotel’s Haunted Room 311 info page:

“The room was restored to make Annalisa Netherly comfortable – not today’s hotel guest. The room does not have any of the modern amenities the other rooms in the hotel offer and is not meant to.”

The Activity

Here’s what the Haunted Room 311 page says about the paranormal activity experienced there:

There are many who believe Room 311 is haunted by the ghost of Annalisa Netherly – a guest who was allegedly beheaded in the bathtub by a jealous lover.  Over the years, a number of guests have reported paranormal activity in the room, including unexplained noises, flickering lights, running water, shadowy figures and more. The haunted room is known by many locals who have experienced paranormal activity of their own.

The Tour

Want to see Room 311 for yourself? I called and spoke with a front desk person named Javier, who I must say was wonderful. So gracious to answer all my questions. Here’s what I found out:

  1. The tour takes place daily from 12-2.
  2. It’s free!
  3. All you need to do is stop by the front desk and let them know you’d like to take the tour.
  4. The tour takes about 10 minutes.
  5. Photos and videos are allowed.
  6. Currently the room is not available to stay in. Will that change in the next couple of months? (Like in time for Halloween season?) Possibly. If it does, I’ll (a) write an update and (b) try to snag a night!
