The seventh season of People Magazine Investigates premieres with a two-hour examination of the Girl Scout Murders. Three Oklahoma Girl Scouts —Lori Lee Farmer, Doris Denise Milner and Michele Heather Guse— were brutally assaulted and murdered while there were away at summer camp in 1977. (And, no, the murders at Camp Scott in Oklahoma didn’t inspire Friday the 13th, the movie. However, learning about it was what inspired the Haunting American True Crimes season on the Haunt Jaunts podcast.)

I’m curious to see how it compares to the 2022 docuseries, Keeper of the Ashes: The Oklahoma Girl Scout Murders. I thought the four-part docuseries was well done, but it wasn’t well received. It covered all the angles in the case, though, from how the girls’ bodies were found to the 10-month-long manhunt for the killer.

It also featured interviews with some of the parents of the victims, camp counselors, law enforcement who worked the case, and even DNA analysts who were brought in decades later. They couldn’t conclusively prove Gene Leroy Hart was the killer back in the 70s, but today’s tech can —and did. (Well, it wasn’t 100% conclusive, but it strongly suggested he really was the murderer, despite his protests to the contrary.)

People Magazine Investigates will condense its presentation into two hours and looks to follow a similar structure for laying out the case. However, it will also feature an exclusive (and emotional) new interview with Lori Lee Farmer’s parents and siblings, as well as testimony from jurors on the trial and experts close to the case.

Season 7 of People Magazine Investigates premieres Monday, July 10 at 9/8c on ID. New episodes will then air every Monday this summer on ID at 9/8c.

  1. Guse and Guse with an accent, what a bizarre coincidence. I remember the yogurt shop murders (because I’m old as dirt), but I don’t remember the outcome. What a terrible event it was!

  2. Author

It’s interesting you brought up the Yogurt Shop Murders, Vera. That was one of the titles that caught my eye. I don’t remember it BUT…I was also in college in 1991. I’m sure the story made national news, but I barely watched TV then. But hat would’ve been super shocking back in the early 90s for such a killing. I mean, I remember people targeting fast food restaurants in the 70s and 80s too, but I don’t remember if more than one or two people died in those incidents. But four teenagers gone just like that? Heartbreaking.
