Okay, I lied. There are more than three haunted house movies being released during the summer of 2020. I didn’t know about Crackle’s The Sonata or I would’ve added it to the list too. But I know about it now and here’s what I learned about it from a press release that a Crackle rep shared with me.
The Sonata Release Date
The Sonata will be exclusively available on Crackle beginning August 1.
The Sonata Cast
The movie stars Freya Tingley (Once Upon a Time) as Rose Fisher, a music virtuoso who inherits a rambling Victorian mansion owned by her deceased father played by Rutger Hauer in one of his final on-screen performances, as well as screen veteran James Faulkner (Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones).
Sidebar: Wait. What? Rutger Hauer died? When? Had to quick Google that. Last year. July 19, 2019 to be exact. How did I miss that? Or did I know, but I forgot? (Memory lapses are becoming more frequent these days.) Did you know that he’d died?
Okay, pardon that interruption. Back to more about The Sonata.
The Sonata Storyline
The Sonata is a moody and chilling film in the tradition of the classic haunted house genre. As Rose explores her estranged father’s home, she learns that being a famous conductor was not his only creative passion. The home is filled with odd symbols, ciphers, and clues that continually guide the beautiful young musician to a truth about her father far darker than anything she ever thought possible.
Well-crafted stories like this are always welcomed by the Crackle audience,” said Philippe Guelton, president of Crackle Plus. “The Sonata combines the suspense of a thriller with the terror of classic horror to create a delicious cocktail of fright, that I know our fans will enjoy.”

Check-In
Courtney Mroch is a globe-trotting restless spirit who’s both possessed by wanderlust and the spirit of adventure, and obsessed with true crime, horror, the paranormal, and weird days. Perhaps it has something to do with her genes? She is related to occult royalty, after all. Marie Laveau, the famous Voodoo practitioner of New Orleans, is one of her ancestors. (Yes, really! As explained here.) That could also explain her infatuation with skeletons.
Speaking of mystical, to learn how Courtney channeled her battle with cancer to conjure up this site, check out HJ’s Origin Story.
Hauer was SO good in Blade Runner. The Sonata sounds great!
He was a fabulous actor. Jammed in Blade Runner for sure. My fave performance of his, which freaked me out most, was in The Hitcher.
