Did you know there are two “Conjuring” houses? So to speak. Zak and crew investigated the Rhode Island farmhouse that inspired the Conjuring movies for their Halloween special, Ghost Adventures: Curse of the Harrisville Farmhouse. But there’s also the house that was used as the set in The Conjuring movie.
The Rhode Island Conjuring House
Recently, new owners took possession of the house in Harrisville, Rhode Island (the Old Arnold Estate), where the Perron family alleged they were terrorized by an unseen presence.
However, I found an interesting post on The Occult Section about a family that used to live there. It was about how the horror movie conjured up trespassers and caused them all kinds of grief as soon as it was released.
Can you imagine people coming by your home at all hours (but especially late at night), peering through your windows in the hopes of glimpsing paranormal activity? Which is asinine, right? Because ghosts are always active. All you have to do is show up to see them…NOT!
Even more interesting, the home owners referenced in the trespassing post had lived in the home for 25 years. They maintained the house wasn’t haunted.
But the new owners believe it is –and believe they can cash in on its claim to haunted fame. They’ll be opening it to the public. And you know the public will be beating a path to their door to see it now that it’s been featured on a popular show like Ghost Adventures. Especially given what happened with all the trespassers after the movie was first released.
If you’re interested in following developments, the new owners have set up a Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/theoldfarmonroundtoproad.
The North Carolina Conjuring House
As is often the case in Hollywood, a more attractive “stunt double” (so to speak) was used for the house in The Conjuring movie.
The Keith House in Currie, North Carolina, which is about a half hour from Wilmington, was transformed into the haunted house portrayed in the movie. At least for the exterior scenes. Most interior scenes were filmed at Screen Gems Studio.
This part of North Carolina –Pender County– has many other TV show and movie filming claims to fame, including:
- Dawson’s Creek
- One Tree Hill
- Silver Bullet
- Sleepy Hollow
- Under the Dome
In case you’re interested, their visitor center has a list of the area’s filming credits with info on how to visit the locations.
Courtney Mroch is a globe-trotting restless spirit who’s both possessed by wanderlust and the spirit of adventure, and obsessed with true crime, horror, the paranormal, and weird days. Perhaps it has something to do with her genes? She is related to occult royalty, after all. Marie Laveau, the famous Voodoo practitioner of New Orleans, is one of her ancestors. (Yes, really! As explained here.) That could also explain her infatuation with skeletons.
Speaking of mystical, to learn how Courtney channeled her battle with cancer to conjure up this site, check out HJ’s Origin Story.
