You could easily be forgiven if you didn’t think a THEM season 2 was happening either. I know I didn’t, and I was pretty bummed about it.
Not that season 1 left off on a major cliffhanger or anything. Or, at least, not from what I remember. (That was three years ago, after all. Most days, I have trouble remembering what I ate for breakfast.)
However, it felt like THEM needed a second season. Or was I just being hopeful?
THEM didn’t get a lot of buzz. Not to the extent I was hoping it would. I thought it was a really well-done horror series with some super creepy AF and chilling moments, great characters, and shocking scenarios. It did nab an impressive 7.2 out of 10 on IMDB, 80% of Google users liked it, but it clocked in with a surprisingly low Tomatometer score of 58% on Rotten Tomatoes. (Although, the audience score was higher at 68%.)
Or maybe I’d read somewhere that it was intended to be an anthology season akin to American Horror Story?
I don’t remember. But I got super excited and hopeful that a season 2 was on its way as soon as I saw the Gofobo Screenings email in my inbox with the subject line: “Watch the official trailer for THEM: THE SCARE – new season premiering April 25.”
Could it be? After all this time, was a season 2 really happening? THEM was an Amazon series. It had to be, didn’t it?
The only way to find out was to open the email and watch the trailer.
THEM Season 2 Details
One thing I realized immediately was, yes. It was the THEM I was thinking of. But it wouldn’t be a continuation of the storyline from season 1, which was set in 1950s Compton, California. Season 2 is once again set in California, but the storyline unfolds in the early 1990s.
As far as what it’s about, here’s the synopsis from Prime Video:
THEM will once again be set in Los Angeles County (the first installment, subtitled Covenant, took place in Compton circa 1952 but will move the time frame forward to 1991). The new story centers on LAPD Homicide Detective DAWN REEVE who is assigned to a new case: the gruesome murder of a foster home mother that has left even the most hardened detectives shaken. Navigating a tumultuous time in Los Angeles, with a city on the razor’s edge of chaos, Dawn is determined to stop the killer. But as she draws closer to the truth, something ominous and malevolent grips her and her family…
I was also super stoked to learn season 1 castmember Deborah Ayorinde is returning for The Scare. However, she appears to be the only veteran. The rest of season’s 2 top-billed cast includes seasoned actors, but series newcomers, Pam Grier, Luke James, Joshua J. Williams, Jeremy Bobb, Wayne Knight, Carlito Olivero, Charles Brice, and Iman Shumpert.
Another difference is that it has two fewer episodes than season 1, which had 10. However, all eight episodes of THEM: The Scare premiere on Prime Video on Thursday, April 25. I’ve saved the date, what about you?
Courtney Mroch is a globe-trotting restless spirit who’s both possessed by wanderlust and the spirit of adventure, and obsessed with true crime, horror, the paranormal, and weird days. Perhaps it has something to do with her genes? She is related to occult royalty, after all. Marie Laveau, the famous Voodoo practitioner of New Orleans, is one of her ancestors. (Yes, really! As explained here.) That could also explain her infatuation with skeletons.
Speaking of mystical, to learn how Courtney channeled her battle with cancer to conjure up this site, check out HJ’s Origin Story.
We have Prime. THEM: The Scare sounds tempting!
“Tempting” is such a good word! I hope if you give it a shot it’s good and you enjoy it.
