Not far from the mecca that Walt Disney turned into Disney World in Orlando is a little street called International Drive.
If you’ve ever been to Orlando, you know there’s nothing small about International Drive. It’s studded with attractions, restaurants and hotels and can be a traffic nightmare.
Speaking of nightmares, another one of sorts is coming to the popular tourist thoroughfare: Zombie Outbreak, a live-action zombie experience.
Live zombies?
Of course they won’t be real zombies. They’ll be actors (and maybe even some high tech animatronics?) dressed as zombies.
According to the Zombie Outbreak site, “[t]he zombies will be wearing cutting-edge targets to produce statistics of your zombie kills. The stats will be recorded for posterity and bragging rights, don’t forget to aim for the head!”
I don’t know about you, but I’m a huge Walking Dead fan. Have you ever wanted to shoot zombies in the head? I sure have. They make it look so fun (and easy) on TV.
Last year my husband and I and a couple of friends of ours went to a simulator shooting range. The guns were all real, but equipped to shoot the screen.
The simulator ran various scenarios. Everything from bank robberies and hostage situations to zombies. Shooting anything period was much harder than they make it look on TV. But aiming especially for the head? And hitting it? Rare shots indeed.
Plus, that was a contained environment. The zombies were just on the screen.
I can’t even imagine how much harder it’d be in a live-action scenario. Maybe the adrenaline would help make me  a better shot? (Actually, this sounds too much like a Halloween haunted attraction and would probably be too intense for my bawk bawk chicken butt self!)
The premise
Here’s the deal as written on their About page:

Zombie Outbreak is a live action zombie experience! You and your team will use state-of-the-art weapons to clear a military base full of walking dead. This is a real-life video game that is a once-in-a-lifetime experience you don’t want to miss.

The weapons you use are real-life replicas; their size, form and function are similar to real models. Pull the trigger for bang, recoil and muzzle flash….

Travel through an apocalyptic military base overrun with zombies clearing the undead and surviving the mission.

Zombie Outbreak is a totally immersive form of entertainment you must experience to believe!

Not the first of its kind

Zombie Outbreak seems to be expanding. They also have a location up in the Wisconsin Dells.
The Dells Zombie Outbreak has been up and running for a while and even has TripAdvisor reviews. (Fairly good ones too. This is the #3 most popular Fun & Games thing to do in the Dells.)
The Orlando Zombie Outbreak isn’t quite up and running yet. It may be as soon as this month though. They’re already booking tickets.
Pricey tickets
One thing I noticed was the price. $19.95 for the Dells location. $24.95 for Orlando.
In the FAQ it says games last 10-15 minutes. (People who scare more easily tend to run through faster.)
For those kind of prices I’d expect a good 20-30 minutes experience. (Although who am I kidding. I’d last 5 if I was lucky.)
