What Do You Think Halloween 2020 Is Going to Look Like?

Are you on Facebook? At the start of the coronavirus pandemic lockdowns, did you see the “Stay Home! Save Halloween!” frames you could put on your profile picture? Maybe you even had one yourself? I loved the message because as I watched events getting canceled left and right, all I could think was, “What’s Halloween 2020 going to look like? Will it be canceled too?”

Then all I could think of was all those parents who are always wanting to move Halloween to a different day when it falls on a weekday. Which it doesn’t this year. Wouldn’t you know, of all the years, Halloween 2020 falls on a Saturday.

Gah!

Trick or Trick

I don’t have kids to take treat or treating, but I do enjoy decorating big and welcoming the trick or treaters who are always anxious to see who lives in the “spooky movie house.” (Which I prefer to think of as Maple Grove Manor.)

Will trick or treating be canceled this year? Or will people wear face masks and dare to come out?

Based on the number of huge Halloween haunted houses announcing cancellations, like Dark Harbor, Terror Behind the Walls and most recently Halloween Horror Nights, I’m thinking trick or treating might fall in one of the unadvised activities categories.

But I’d love to be wrong about that.

What do you think? Will we see trick or treaters this year? And, if not, do you think it will have any impact on the tradition going forward?

Haunted Houses

I, myself, am a bawk bawk chicken butt when it comes to Halloween haunted houses. I love Disney’s Haunted Mansion ride. Pop me in a Doombuggy and send me through a haunted attraction that way any day.

Make me walk through a dimly lit maze where people in masks, possibly wielding chainsaws, will pop out and chase me? Nope. You can keep it.

Yet, I’m so fascinated by every aspect of these things. From the set design and creation to the scare actors.

It’d be nice if something as simple as wearing masks could drop transmission rates and make it safer for people to frequent such venues. Maybe then some could still open.

I did read about The Haunted Road today though, a drive-thru haunted event coming to Orlando this year. It sounds like it’s going to comparable to the haunted drive-in Toyko.

At least people are getting creative. Maybe we’ll see more of that? What about near you? Have you seen any announcements of Halloween haunted houses finding ways to reinvent their attractions in a social distancing acceptable way?

Corn Mazes and Pumpkin Patches

Since these happen outside and it’s pretty easy to social distance, maybe these will still happen?

Or will they meet the same fate as haunted houses and decide it’s not safe to do?

Halloween Parties

Yeah. These seem unlikely.

All I can think of is traditional Halloween party games that for sure are off the list, like bobbing for apples. (Although, that game may have been defunct for a while. I’ve never been to a party where they bobbed for apples come to think of it. Feeling a little gypped, to be honest.)

However, if Memorial Day and Fourth of July gatherings are any measure, I’m sure there will be plenty of people who will still have Halloween parties, whether they’re advisable or not.

And who knows? Maybe by October 31, it won’t be against the advice of doctors or city and state mandates not to gather in large groups anymore. It is three months away, after all. One thing we’ve seen this year is a lot can change in one week, much less one month.

Dressing Up and Decorations

I’m lumping these together because no matter what else is taken away from us this Halloween, we can still dress up and decorate.

We might be all dressed up with nowhere to go besides our own decorated homes, but it’s better than nothing.

Plus Halloween 2020 decor is already hitting the shelves. So while it may not feel the same as Halloween’s past, it will still look it.

  1. My guess is that with all the remote learning, kids will be itching to get out and about. I suspect trick-or-treating will be more popular this year.
