Vince Vaugh and Kathryn Newton in Freaky
Vince Vaugh and Kathryn Newton swap bods in Freaky.

I’ve been dying to see the horror-comedy Freaky ever since I saw the trailer for it back in the Fall. It hit theaters on Friday, November 13, 2020. I was hoping it would also release to VOD at the same time, but it didn’t. However, three weeks later it has. Here’s where to stream Freaky…and whether it’s worth the $19.99 rental.

Freaky First Impressions

Freaky’s trailer had me in stitches, but did they use up the best parts then? You know how movies sometimes do that? Then the movie itself turns out to be let down. Is that Freaky‘s story?

No. But it also was a bit misleading.

There is definitely a humor aspect to Freaky, but I thought it’d be a little lighter than it was. More The Hot Chick meets…I don’t know what. Maybe Happy Death Day? Which had some funny moments as well, but isn’t really labeled a horror-comedy. (Which, coincidentally, both Freaky and Happy Death Day share the same director, Christopher Landon.)

Freaky‘s horror component isn’t compromised of a lot of jump scares or intense anticipation, but there is an awful lot of gore. Much more than I was expecting.

But it was funny too.

Vince Vaughn in Freaky

Vince Vaughn did not disappoint playing a teenage girl. A bathroom scene where Millie, now in the Blissfield Butcher’s body (the Butcher is the serial killer), has to pee held some surprising humor.

I would’ve expected Millie to be grossed out peeing from a man’s body. Instead, she finds it at first awkward, then kinda cool. She wonders how to operate this newfound piece of anatomy. Is she supposed to hold it? Does she have to wipe? She also comments that standing up to pee is pretty “rad.” And then when she twists around and watches it flaps? Nope. Didn’t see any of that coming, or that I’d find it so amusing but I did.

Before the switch happens and he trades places with Millie, Vaughn also makes a chilling serial killer. It’s mostly physical acting, very little (if any?) verbal, relying on his size to intimidate and torment.

Seeing this side of him was refreshing. Because I always think of his comedies first (especially Wedding Crashers and Four Christmases). I forget what a creepy bad guy he made as Norman Bates in the 1998 Psycho remake

Kathryn Newton in Freaky

But Kathryn Newton also deserves major kudos too. She absolutely nailed playing the body-swapped crazy serial killer.

When she becomes the Butcher, she doesn’t say much either. She also relies on physical acting. But her body is a lot more petite than Vaughn’s. How intimidating can she be? Actually, pretty darn very!

Some of her looks were absolutely chilling. That’s the mark of a great actor: the ability to convey more in an expression than words alone could convey.

Freaky: An Instant Friday the 13th Classic?

Is Freaky a once-and-done, or could I see making room for this on a list of good horror movies to watch on Friday the 13ths? Because, in case you’re not familiar with the plot and I didn’t make it clear, Freaky is a spooky adaption of Freaky Friday, but instead of a mom and daughter swapping bodies on Friday the 13th, a serial killer and a teenage girl do.

I definitely can see rewatching this for Friday the 13th movie nights going forward. It’s a fun twist on the slasher genre.

And I should also mention two other notable performances that made this movie worth watching: Misha Osherovich (who plays Millie’s gay BFF, Josh) and Celest O’Connor (who play Millie’s other BFF, Nyla). Some of their one-liners are classic! (Especially Josh’s, “You’re black! I’m gay! We are so dead!”)

However, it’s not perfect. The premise for how the swap happens is super ridiculous and doesn’t fit in nicely (at all!) with the storyline overall, but everything else about the movie is a lot of fun and well done.

I liked Happy Death Day more, but Freaky was a fun diversion on a Friday night. (Even if it wasn’t a Friday the 13th.)

Freaky Ratings

So far it’s got a 6.6 out of 10 stars on IMDB. Its Rotten Tomatoes score is pretty consistent between both critics and viewers alike with an 83% Tomatometer rating and an 80% Audience score. It’s also scoring high with Google users: 85%.

I’m torn between 3.5 and 4 skulls. If it had been a little less gory and the swap premise hadn’t been so hokey and generic, I might have been wavering more between 4 and 4.5 skulls. However, since I didn’t like those two things, I’ll run with 3.5 out of 4 skulls.

Three and a half skulls
