Live-action Scooby-Doo Mystery Machine
Will they use a Mystery Machine like the one at Universal Studios Orlando in a live-action Scooby-Doo series?

If you’re all about seeing a live-action Scooby-Doo series on streaming somewhere, you may be in luck. The Hollywood Reporter recently dropped deets about such a project in the works at Netflix. It’s not a done deal yet, but they said it’s close.

Apparently, it has “a script-to-series commitment at Netflix, meaning if the script is well received, it would trigger a straight-to-series order.”

So does that mean the script is already written? It didn’t sound like it from the article, but writers are attached to the project. Specifically Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg. They’ve executive produced and written a lot of things together, including From, Cowboy Bebop, Citadel, and Zoo.

It’s definitely not the first time a live-action Scooby-Doo has been attempted. The much anticipated Scooby-Doo movie hit the big screen in 2002, with a sequel, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, following in 2004. In 2009, Cartoon Network released the TV movie Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins in honor of the cartoon’s 40th anniversary.

Even though it’s been over 50 years since Scooby-Doo first premiered, people still have an appetite for the series. The most recent incarnation, the animated series Velma on Max, marks the first spin-off. It currently has two seasons.

But getting back to the live-action Scooby-Doo that’s in the works, I’m already wondering about the cast. Since there’s no completed script yet or even a confirmed green light for the series, it’s all just speculation now. But that doesn’t mean we can’t already think about who might star as Fred, Daphne, Shaggy and Velma. Who will they cast? Will it be newcomers or familiar faces? Is there anyone you’d like to see in any of the roles?

And what about Scoob? He’s always been some sort of CGI in the other live-action Scooby-Doo movies. Which makes sense. Even though he’s based on a real breed of dog (Great Dane), his cartoon version is very unique-looking. Will they stay with that image or break the mold and use a real dog? Or maybe go with a mix of real dog and CGI?

Then there’s the plot. Scooby-Doo‘s true genre is horror comedy. Or maybe even more mystery comedy. What direction with Appelbaum and Rosenberg take it? Will they spice it up with a darker flavor akin to the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina? I think they have to keep the comedy component, though. At least a little bit.

Time will tell what, but I’m curious and already excited to see what will happen. What about you?

  1. Scooby is my fave. We had a Dane. They’re fabulous dogs! Shaggy was funny. I had a cartoon crush on him. I admired Velma’s smarts. Those were my faves.

Oooh! Yon actually had a Scooby Doo dog? What as his or her name…and was your decision to get one inspired by the cartoon at all? Also, I love your choices. I have to say I think Scooby was my favorite too, BUT until you picked him, I’m not sure I would’ve thought to say that! I was being biased towards the human characters and not even thinking of the titular one!!! LOL

  3. His name was Thorpe, named after Ian Thorpe the Australian swimmer who had such big feet (size 17). Because Dane feet, obs. My love for Danes is totally a result of Scooby-Doo!
